With spring sports postseason approaching, here are 10 standout candidates for the Guthrie Athlete of the Week award, covering events from May 2-8, 2026.

Nominees are selected from the coverage areas of the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin, Elmira Star-Gazette, Ithaca Journal, and Corning Leader, based primarily on submitted results.

**This week’s nominees:**

**Ronin Ault, Waverly baseball:** Ault delivered three consecutive 3-for-4 performances, including home runs in wins over Owego and Oneonta. He compiled 10 RBIs across those games, then added a homer and two RBIs in another victory against Owego. On the mound, Ault threw six innings of three-hit ball, allowing one earned run in a win over Owego.

**Hannah Carpenter, Waverly softball:** Carpenter went 4-for-5 with two home runs, a double, three runs scored, and eight RBIs in a win over Owego.

**Jackson Cavalier, Elmira baseball:** Cavalier opened the week with a four-hit shutout in a victory over Corning. He then went 3-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs in another win against Corning, followed by a double and two runs scored as Elmira swept the three-game series.

**Marley Devlin, Elmira girls flag football:** Devlin completed 14 of 26 passes for 178 yards and four touchdowns in a win over Ithaca. She later threw for 141 yards and a touchdown on 11-of-20 passing, adding 105 rushing yards and two scores on 15 carries in a victory against Corning.

**Erin Gowe, Vestal softball:** Gowe struck out 16 batters in a two-hit shutout against Maine-Endwell. Earlier, she fanned seven in a five-hit, 4-3 win over Webster Schroeder.

**Matti Johnston, Corning softball:** Johnston struck out 13 in a five-inning, two-hit gem against Binghamton, clinching the STAC West title. She also went 2-for-3 with a home run, three runs, and four RBIs in that game. Later, she pitched a five-inning one-hitter with 12 strikeouts and went 3-for-3 with two triples and three RBIs in a win over Union-Endicott.

**Lexi Lese, Horseheads girls lacrosse:** Lese tallied eight goals and two assists in a win over Elmira, followed by two goals and two assists in a victory against Corning.

**Makenzie Lombardini, Chenango Valley/Johnson City girls lacrosse:** Lombardini recorded six goals and two assists in a win over Whitney Point.

**Tyson Schmitt, Windsor baseball:** Schmitt struck out 10 in a one-hit shutout against Binghamton. He went 3-for-5 with a triple and four RBIs in a win over Chenango Forks, and added a 1-for-2 performance with two runs and an RBI against Johnson City.

**Finn Schweizer, Elmira Notre Dame/Watkins Glen boys lacrosse:** Schweizer scored seven goals and added an assist in a 15-10 victory over Windsor. Earlier in the week, he had six goals and an assist in a win against Marcus Whitman.
