Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is an unconventional figure in football for many reasons. At 61, he is neither Catalan nor Spanish, a departure from the club’s typical leadership profile. Unlike most foreign managers at Barça, Flick lacks a playing connection to the club, and he does not speak fluent Spanish, preferring to conduct press conferences in English.
His tactical approach is equally distinct, bringing Barcelona domestic dominance while drawing criticism for their struggles in Europe. After securing another La Liga title on Sunday with a win over Real Madrid in El Clásico, Flick’s tenure demands a closer look at both its triumphs and its limits.
Since arriving in the summer of 2024, Flick has won two La Liga titles, topping the table in both seasons. The 2025/26 crown was sealed with a win against their archrivals. He also claimed the 2024/25 Copa del Rey and the 2025 and 2026 Supercopa de España. Domestically, Flick has turned Barcelona into a powerhouse.
However, European success has eluded him. In the 2024/25 Champions League, Barcelona finished second in the league phase but lost to Inter Milan in a thrilling 7-6 aggregate semifinal, a defeat made more painful by Inter’s subsequent thrashing by PSG in the final. In the 2025/26 edition, Barça fell to Atlético Madrid in the quarterfinals, with a player sent off in both legs. Critics point to Flick’s high-press style as the culprit. Against Inter, Barcelona’s aggression was exposed on the counter; against Atleti, red cards came from last-man fouls after being caught high up the pitch.
Flick’s system revolves around an intense high press, but it is distinct from many others. When the press is broken, Barcelona responds with another wave of pressing rather than falling back—an extremely risky tactic born from his Bundesliga background. This approach thrives domestically over a long season and in the Champions League league phase, but in knockout matches against European teams capable of punishing counters, it has proved fatal.
To execute this, Barcelona employs an exceptionally high defensive line, which has led to both spectacular wins and devastating defeats. Flick’s legacy at the club remains a subject of debate: a domestic king whose European adventures have yet to match the heights of his league success.
