Drama Intensifies in 2. Bundesliga

Hannover 96 failed to capitalize on SC Paderborn’s slip-up and suffered another setback in their promotion campaign. The Lower Saxony side could only manage a 1-1 (0-0) draw at VfL Bochum on the penultimate matchday. As a result, coach Christian Titz’s team heads into the final round in third place with 59 points, level with fourth-placed Paderborn. SV Elversberg, also on 59 points, occupy second place due to a significantly superior goal difference. The Saarland club still plays at Fortuna Düsseldorf on Sunday and could all but seal promotion with a win.

After a lackluster first half, center-back Maik Nawrocki headed Hannover into the lead in the 50th minute from a short corner. Bochum’s response came quickly through substitute Farid Alfa-Ruprecht, who curled a fine shot into the far corner to level the score in the 55th minute. Under pressure, Hannover pushed forward in the closing stages at a sold-out Ruhrstadion but were thwarted by Bochum goalkeeper Timo Horn.

With that single away point, Hannover goes into the final matchday occupying the relegation playoff spot. Elversberg, however, could take a major step toward Bundesliga promotion on Sunday thanks to the draws by both Hannover and Paderborn. A victory over relegation-threatened Düsseldorf would virtually secure second place for the Saarland side given their much better goal difference.

**Relegation Battle in 2. Bundesliga: Braunschweig and Magdeburg Celebrate**

Eintracht Braunschweig claimed a crucial home victory in the relegation fight, beating Dynamo Dresden 2-1 (1-0). The win moved Braunschweig above Arminia Bielefeld in the table. Both Braunschweig and Dresden will now anxiously await the results of Greuther Fürth and Fortuna Düsseldorf on Sunday. If both lose, Dresden—after a strong second half of the season—would be mathematically safe. The visitors needed at least a point to secure survival on their own terms.

In front of 22,480 spectators, Florian Flick put Braunschweig ahead in the 20th minute. Faride Alidou doubled the lead shortly after the break in the 50th minute. In the 67th minute, Braunschweig goalkeeper Ron-Thorben Hoffmann saved a penalty from Stefan Kutschke. The experienced Dynamo striker did manage to head home a consolation goal in the 86th minute, making it 2-1.

Both teams engaged in a fierce battle from the first whistle. Backed by strong recent form, Dynamo looked the more composed and confident side. Shortly after falling behind, Braunschweig’s Hoffmann made a brilliant save to deny Vincent Vermeij an instant equalizer in the 22nd minute. Braunschweig defended with great effort and passion, limiting Dresden’s clear chances. Jason Ceka in the 35th minute and Jakob Lemmer in the 82nd minute posed threats, while Tony Menzel hit the crossbar in stoppage time (90+6) after the penalty miss and Dresden’s late goal.

1. FC Magdeburg took a major step toward survival, earning a deserved 3-1 (2-0) win at already-safe Holstein Kiel. Coach Petrik Sander’s side could celebrate their league status retention on Sunday, depending on other results. Jean Hugonet (40th minute), Dariusz Stalmach (45+2), and Baris Atik (56th, direct corner kick) scored for the visitors. Adrián Kapr netted for Kiel.
